Zofia Kulik and Przemyslaw Kwiek (KwieKulik) since the 1970s pioneered the transformation of artistic practice into social experimentation. KwieKulik sought to reconcile artistic praxis with everyday life, essentially basing on the premise that form is a fact of society. The couple’s pioneering approach to film, photography, and multi-screen slide projection epitomise their unique variation of expanded cinema.

This monograph, stemming from a long-term research project on the KwieKulik Archive, documents Zofia Kulik and Przemyslaw Kwiek’s collective works from 1971 to 1987, illuminating the radically unique position of the artists in the history of neo-avant-garde in Central Europe. The book covers and documents more than 200 events, and includes a “KwieKulik Glossary,” the collection of concepts introduced and applied by the artists. The essays in the book are featuring excerpts from texts devoted to KwieKulik in the course of the last decades.

Piero Gilardi (born 1942 in Torino) is a pioneer of Arte Povera and a proud advocate of an ecological-concerned undertaking in visual arts. He is a peripatetic artist who gathered information about experimental art and creators in the 1960s, promoting the work of Richard Long or Jan Dibbets, and introducing Bruce Nauman or Eva Hesse into Europe. He is also a political activist who marched with FIAT workers in the 1970s, and who founded, in the 2000s the Living Art Park, commissioning earthworks to contemporary artists such as Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster or Lara Almarcegui.

A central figure in Glasgow’s vibrant art scene, Luke Fowler’s cinematic collages break down conventional approaches to biographical and documentary filmmaking. Fowler’s films have often been linked to British Free Cinema, the distinctive aesthetic of which came out of a conscious decision to engage with the reality of contemporary Britain in the 1950s. Avoiding didactic voice-over commentaries and narrative continuity, Fowler similarly uses impressionistic sound and editing. However, Fowler moves beyond simply referencing the work of his predecessors. Intuitively applying the logic, aesthetics, and politics of his subjects onto the film he is making about them, he creates atmospheric, sampled histories that reverberate with the vitality of the people he studies.

Louise Lawler focuses her camera on high art and its spaces, from the rarefied white cube to the windowless storeroom, from the collector’s luxurious bedroom to the featureless boardroom. Part institutional critique, part social commentary and part wandering gaze, Lawler’s glossy photographs redirect the viewer’s attention from the artworks to their environs, exposing a set of supple relationships surrounding the presentation and marketing of art and its role in conferring and reflecting power.

In 1984, Lawler was granted access to the homes of visionary collectors Burton and Emily Tremaine, and she has since tracked the works she photographed there as they have wended their way through museums and auction houses, this publication gathers almost all the Tremaine Pictures produced between 1984 and 2007.
