Produced on the occasion of the group exhibition Love is Colder than Capital at The Kunsthaus Bregenz, 2 February – 14 April, 2013, which brought together 16 artists who explore the interrelationships of economics and feelings in contemporary society.

This artist’s book designed by Belgian artist Olivier Foulon is the result of a years-long research into Isa Genzken’s abandoned sculpture project Ring, a public sculpture originally planned for the exhibition Beelden in de Stad/Sculpture in the City as part of Rotterdam ’88 from 13 May to 1 October 1988, whose various prefabricated parts allegedly still lie dormant in the port of Rotterdam. It features two essays on Isa Genzken by Jan van Adrichem, a section gathering archival documents, and a comprehensive press kit referring to the aborted project.

Isa Genzken’s Der Spiegel 1989-1991 consists of 121 reproductions of black-and-white photographs cut out of the influential German newsweekly Der Spiegel over a period of three years. The images are presented starkly, bereft of photo credits or captions: having been freed from their usual meaning-giving context, the images assume a mystery and free-floating universality as the viewer unconsciously struggles to recall the specificity of the sensational news story and headline to which they were once attached. The book is produced in a limited edition of 700 numbered copies.
